Rao’s Restaurant, a popular landmark in New York City, and famous for being difficult to get a table, opened in 1896 and has been owned and managed by several generations of the Rao family for over 100 years. LeRoy Neiman was taken for his first late hour visit to Rao’s by his pal Rocky Graziano in the late 1960’s. Vincent Rao wearing his Stetson hat held forth from the kitchen as his wife, Anna, always made the clientele feel at home. For over thirty years a Neiman, on-the-spot sketch of Vincent hung next to the bar.
Currently, nephew Frank Pelligrino oversees the action. Every night, power brokers, politicians, Broadway and film stars as well as famous sports figures dine at the intimate Italian restaurant. Woody Allen, Billy Crystal, Andre Agassi, Martin Scorcese, Tony Bennett to name a few are some of the regulars that frequent what has become more of a private club than a public eatery. Recently, LeRoy Neiman and Tony Bennett were seen sketching each other at the table.
Famous not only for its traditional Italian delicacies, but also for its authentic charm that has become synonymous with the Rao’s name. Each of the ten tables is owned by a select few, and one cannot get a seat unless you are “invited” by one of the table’s owners. If so unfortunate, you can always stand at the bar.
LeRoy Neiman decided that painting Frank Sinatra standing at the Rao’s bar truly captures the atmosphere and history of the establishment. LeRoy depicts Sinatra being served his usual amber-colored drink by Nick the Vest, the bartender famous for his memory of what his guests are drinking and his collection of over one hundred and forty flashy vests.
In Frank at Rao’s, Neiman adds a quintessential New York landmark to his famous restaurant and bar collection, which includes P.J. Clarke’s, The Irish-American Bar, F.X. McRory’s Whiskey Bar, Pump Room Bar, The Polo Lounge, Toots Shors Bar, and the Bar at 21. We have seen LeRoy depict Sinatra performing onstage with Sammy and Liza, and recording in the studio. In Frank at Rao’s, LeRoy has captured America’s most beloved singers in one of New York’s most colorful restaurants.
