The latest in the series of the artist’s highly sought after animal portraits, Portrait of the Black Panther takes us once again into the wild animal territories of Africa. As in Mr. Neiman’s other animal portrayals, the viewer is confronted head on with this mythological animal. Portrait of the Black Panther truly embodies the elements of beauty and mystery.
The Black Panther finds its greatest element of power and grace in the hours of darkness, and it is at this moment that Neiman chooses to depict the animal staring out of the dense jungle grass with its emerald green eyes. The panther, in general, is smaller but more fierce and aggressive than the lion and tiger. Unlike other cats, the panther is known to be a solitary animal and is most comfortable by itself roaming within its own marked territory. Having the ability to move with ease and strike with ferocity, this melanistic animal quietly stalks, pursues, and hunts its prey. The viewer is left with uncertainty as to the panther’s next move. As in Neiman’s previous animal portraits, the spectator is once again the visitor in the animal’s natural domain.
