Martha Graham's impact on dance is staggering and often compared to that of Picasso's in painting, Stravinsky's music, and Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture. Her contributions transformed this art, revitalizing and expanding modern dance around the world. To quote Martha Graham:
“I think the reason dance has held such an ageless magic for the world is that it has been the symbol of the performance of living. Many times I hear the phrase….the dance of life. It is close to me for a very simple and understandable reason. The instrument through which the dance speaks is also the instrument through which life is lived…the human body.”
LeRoy Neiman pays homage to the Mother of Modern Dance in The Martha Graham Suite – a collection of five works that celebrate the beauty of human form and Martha Graham’s contribution to its expression.
Whether sketching from backstage or from the front row, LeRoy Neiman is a master at capturing action and emotion, and one cannot imagine a subject matter that compliments his style more than the human form. We have seen Neiman portray ballet’s greatest masters in Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov, prima ballerina Cynthia Gregory, the 1940’s American style tap-dancing of Fred Astaire, and the cultural beats in Havana Rhythm. In The Martha Graham Suite, Neiman invites the viewer to experience the refined poses and fluid transitions of the female and male form which come to life.
The Martha Graham Suite joins Neiman’s portrayals of the twentieth century’s most influential and beloved figures. To quote LeRoy Neiman:
”In discussing her philosophy of dance, the words courage and strength are interspersed with declarations of her commitment to art. Hers was a lifetime of discipline and passion to that calling. I am honored to have a selection of my interpretations of Martha Graham and her dance together in this suite, an appreciation of her bold creativity and great artistry.”
