LeRoy Neiman returns to the African savannah, a vast stage of endless sweeping golden plains, green escarpments, scattered trees, scarce watering holes, winding rivers and swamps. The featured serigraph is a study of the leopard, elegant and solitary, calculating, patient and persistent. The spotted cats spend much of their time in the branches of trees, keeping clear of their larger neighbors while positioned to pounce on any prey that may wander within range. But not every meal simply delivers itself. Here she has come down from her tree and is seen on the prowl, almost as if she is posing. Supple in gold and yellow with rainbow spots, hiding in the tall grass, still green in the spring or early summer, she stretches to full length, straining for a better view with eyes wide open and ears pointed forward. Soon enough she will crouch down and creep through the grass to get as close as possible, before bursting out to capture her prey.
