"The Mick" was one of the best-loved players for the legendary New York Yankees. After joining the team in 1951, he quickly took over center field, the position relinquished by the retiring Joe DiMaggio. Although replacing the incomparable "Yankee Clipper" was a very tall order, Mantle easily managed the task with his great skill, respect for tradition and irrepressible good humor. Neiman started sketching Mickey in action the last seasons of his incredible career, when their friendship developed. After Mantle's retirement, the artist would frequently join the player and his baseball buddies in Mantle's favorite booth at his restaurant, Mickey Mantle's on Central Park South, just steps away from Neiman's studio. The featured serigraph carries additional sentimental memories for LeRoy as Mickey always had a particular liking for the original painting on which the print is based.
