One of baseball’s legendary pitchers, and perhaps the best ever, Sandy Koufax spent his entire career with the Dodgers, both in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. The overpowering pitcher of his era, he led his team to three pennants and World Series Championships in 1963 and 1965. He frequently led the National League in wins, shutouts, ERA and strikeouts. He was a five-time All-Star, won the Cy Young Award three times, and was selected Most Valuable Player in the 1963 World Series. He retired at 31 to avoid permanently damaging his arm and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame five years later, the youngest player ever elected and only the sixth to be elected in his first year of eligibility. Says Neiman, “When you paint Sandy Koufax, you’re not just painting a great pitcher. It’s very important to not lose sight of the great individuality that set him apart from the typical athlete. He stood tall, far above the baseball norm. He was like Muhammad Ali or Arthur Ashe, and distinguished himself for what he believed in.” The artist is referring to Koufax’s famous refusal to pitch a game in the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur, the Jewish holy Day of Atonement. His decision to sit out one of the biggest games of his career for religious reasons made the news far beyond baseball. Although many feared he would upset Dodgers fans, in fact both baseball fans and the public at large responded with respect and admiration for his devoutness and integrity. Coming at a time when many minority groups were asserting their individuality and civil rights, Koufax both joined and broadened the trend of the times and helped define an era. In Neiman’s portrait of the great pitcher, the artist presents his subject against a backdrop of glowing gold, yellow and red, grounded in deeper blues and greens. This rainbow might represent the many minority groups whose acceptance into the American mainstream Koufax helped bring about. As always, the artist is meticulous in realistically portraying the athlete’s stance, posture, hands, ball and glove. In the face and eyes he captures the intense competitive fire of the player who said “Pitching is the art of instilling fear." LeRoy Neiman, whose art is always more than it appears, has created a portrait of depth and meaning in Sandy Koufax.
