Knoedler Publishing's September 1995 release is LeRoy Neiman's limited edition serigraph entitled "The Babe".
The Babe, of course, is the legendary George Herman "Babe" Ruth, the most accomplished and famous baseball player of all time. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Babe's birth, and LeRoy Neiman has marked the occasion with a vibrant and powerful memento that will be an essential element of all Neiman collections.
One of the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the "Sultan of Swat" is best known as a home run hitter. His lifetime total of 714 home runs was a record that stood for 39 years. Babe also hit 60 home runs in one season, a record that, arguably, still stands today.
In the featured serigraph, Neiman presents the Babe in a characteristic home run pose, watching a ball sail off his bat and over the outfield wall. Although Neiman prides himself on normally working from life, for this work he searched the photographic archives for an image that was both instantly recognizable and expressive of character to consult with. The artist has deftly captured the athlete's solid, stocky stance, instantly familiar to millions of baseball fans. Neiman's detailed portrayal of the Babe's expression reveals the two incongruous sides of the Babe's personality: a tough competitor gazing intently to see whether the ball will actually go over the wall, as well as a childlike man wondering in awe at what his skills have accomplished, yet again. The baseball crowd and dugout form the background, mainly in blue and black, against which the Babe, in the white and dark blue Yankee pinstripes, looms larger than life, exuding power, grace and confidence. It is a fitting perspective of one of the best baseball players of all time, from today's premiere sports artist.
