Knoedler Publishing's April, 1999 release is LeRoy Neiman's limited edition serigraph entitled "Elephant Charge".
Revisiting the savanna of Africa, scene of many of his most beloved prints, the artist has executed a thrilling group portrait of the largest animal on land, the elephant. The lion may have been given the title, "King of the Beasts", but it is the elephant that truly fears no other animal. Generally, these gentle giants lumber gracefully and unmolested about the plains, using their improbable but delightful trunks to pluck delectable leaves from the treetops and cool themselves with showers of water or dust. But like any animal, elephants can be vexed, and when they rouse themselves for a charge the earth itself shakes and even the lions run for cover.
The featured serigraph presents an awesome sight: four full-grown bulls charging directly at the viewer. As if the potent pachyderms aren't large enough, they spread their ears to increase their apparent size and further intimidate their target. The lead elephant is characteristically Neiman, a large and powerful multi-colored glory in red, yellow, green and blue. His comrades are blue, red and orange. Their long, sharp ivory tusks glisten in the blistering African sun.
Collectors will be eager to add "Elephant Charge" to the herd of Neiman elephant prints which already includes "Elephant Family", "Elephant Nocturne", "Elephant Stampede", "Shikar" and "Kilimanjaro Bulls".
