The most famous thoroughfare in the world began as a humble cow path leading from the tiny settlement of New Amsterdam to pastures 10 miles north in what is now the Bronx. It has since become known for another kind of “cattle call” - actors and actresses auditioning for roles in the world’s largest and most prestigious theater district. The first theaters went up more than 100 years ago, and Broadway quickly became a mecca for entertainment. Theater is the star of Broadway, but the large cast of supporting characters includes all manner of taverns, cabarets, jazz clubs, bistros, restaurants, movie houses and arcades. As entertaining as any play or musical are the glowing theater marquees and enormous neon advertisements that climb up the skyscrapers like ivy up a wall, giving Broadway its famous nickname, “The Great White Way”.
In the featured serigraph, long-time New Yorker and frequent theater-goer LeRoy Neiman celebrates the Lights of Broadway. Neiman’s dramatic backdrop is black paper as dark as night. He then covers the skyscrapers with glittering neon tributes to the greatest productions of American theater. The display is a history lesson in Broadway theater, including ground-breaking shows like “Oklahoma”, “West Side Story” and “Hair”, as well as shows that are about Broadway itself, like “Guys and Dolls”, “A Chorus Line”, “Fosse” and this year’s smash, “The Producers.” Says Neiman, “The spectacular Times Square signs represent the spirit of what New York and Broadway are all about.” Down on the street, taxis and limousines crawl through perpetually heavy traffic, pedestrians vigorously assert their right of way, and mounted policemen endeavor to keep everything peaceful and moving along.
LeRoy Neiman’s latest masterpiece, “The Lights of Broadway,” is sure to receive rave reviews and a standing ovation.
